A review of “Best data modelling tools” falls well short of my expectations #PowerDesigner #erwin #erstudio

ITPro have just published an article called “Best data modelling tools“. When I clicked on the link in my regular ITPro email, I expected to find a well-reasoned set of arguments about the pros and cons of several tools, based upon a defined list of expectations.

I was hugely disappointed by what I found in this ‘In-depth’ (their words, not mine) review. My score for this ‘review’ – 1 out of 10.

It’s probably better to say that I was disappointed by what I didn’t find – there is no list of expectations, and there are no well-reasoned arguments. The authors do acknowledge that there are “subtle differences between the leading platforms”, but they fail to describe them.

There are just a few words to describe each of seven tools, two of which are from the same vendor, with no attempt at any form of comparison. The reader is left none the wiser about their capabilities.

By the way, the folks at Erwin will be very disappointed by this review, as their tool isn’t even mentioned.

Back-to-back conferences next week in beautiful Bucks – #CHAR13 and #PGDayUK #PostgeSQL

It’s not too late to book yourself in to back-to-back conferences on Thursday and Friday next week,  at Horwood House in Buckinghamshire, England. Horwood House is a few miles from Milton Keynes, so it’s easily accessible by train from London Euston, and by car from Heathrow  and other airports (Luton is the nearest one).

On Thursday July 11th, we have CHAR(13), aimed at anyone interested in Clustering, High Availability, and Replication plus all forms of Parallel, Distributed and Grid architectures. It’s also useful for those of you using or considering PostgreSQL. See http://www.char13.info/schedule for more information.

On Friday July 12th, we have the PostgreSQL User Group conference (PG Day) – again, if you’re using or considering PostgreSQL, you need to attend. See http://www.postgresqlusergroup.org.uk/schedule for more information.

Attend both conferences and you’ll get a discount!
