Looking for yourself can pay dividends #PowerDesigner

On Twitter earlier today, I exchanged tweets with Jane Roberts (@redjane) about finding myself in the phone book. Well, now I’ve just found myself on YouTube!

I was actually curious about videos of a different George McGeachie, a retired footballer who’s a tad older than I am, and searched for my name in YouTube. I didn’t find what I was looking for, but I did find a video that had previously been published on mypowerdesigner.com, which SAP closed down years ago; it was recorded at a SAP conference in the Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.

I thought it had disappeared without trace, but there it is. It’s me (of course), talking about my soon-to-be-published book “Data Modeling Made Simple with PowerDesigner” – this was before the editor suggested drastic re-ordering of the chapters, so my chapter references are wrong, but hey, I’ve re-discovered myself!

Essential reading for data modellers – new book by Ross and Lam

Check the book reviews page for a review of a must-read volume for data modellers – “Building Business Solutions: Business Analysis with Business Rules” by Ron Ross and Gladys Lam.

PD book is aimed at ALL PD users

Sorry to keep harping on about the PowerDesigner book, but I forgot to point out that we organised the chapters to separate the introduction to data modelling from the introduction to PowerDesigner. This allows users of other PowerDesigner models to concentrate on the PD-specific material, hopefully making the book useful to a wider audience. I do use data models in all the ‘your turn’ sections and exercises, but I’m sure that process modellers and enterprise architects can cope with that. 🙂

Thanks for attending yesterday’s webcast

Thanks to everyone who attended the “Data Modeling Made Simple with PowerDesigner” webcast yesterday, and thanks also to David Dichmann for stepping in when my audio connection failed!

If you want to know more about the Glossary feature introduced in PowerDesigner 16, Matt Creason (Sybase PD guru) will be providing a deeper dive into the Enterprise Glossary during the Blueprint Techcast on November 10th from 1:00 – 2:00 pm ET (10:00 – 11:00 am PT). Register here – www.sybase.com/blueprinttechcast.

The book is finished!

I’ve been quiet for a few months, because “Data modeling Made Simple with PowerDesigner” took over my life. Well, the manuscript has been delivered, and the book will be in print in early November.

The book is a joint effort with renowned data modelling expert Steve Hoberman. We created a PowerDesigner-specific variant of the 2nd edition of his best-selling book “Data Modeling Made Simple”. The intention was to produce a book that, while targeted at data modellers, would be relevant to any user of PowerDesigner. The explanations, examples and exercises are based on data models, but the techniques can also apply to process models, enterprise architecture, etc.

It’s a large book, so I’m afraid it won’t be cheap. You can save 20% if you pre-order at http://www.technicspub.com/product.sc?productId=29&categoryId=1 – using code PD20Promo at the checkout.
