A review of “Best data modelling tools” falls well short of my expectations #PowerDesigner #erwin #erstudio

ITPro have just published an article called “Best data modelling tools“. When I clicked on the link in my regular ITPro email, I expected to find a well-reasoned set of arguments about the pros and cons of several tools, based upon a defined list of expectations.

I was hugely disappointed by what I found in this ‘In-depth’ (their words, not mine) review. My score for this ‘review’ – 1 out of 10.

It’s probably better to say that I was disappointed by what I didn’t find – there is no list of expectations, and there are no well-reasoned arguments. The authors do acknowledge that there are “subtle differences between the leading platforms”, but they fail to describe them.

There are just a few words to describe each of seven tools, two of which are from the same vendor, with no attempt at any form of comparison. The reader is left none the wiser about their capabilities.

By the way, the folks at Erwin will be very disappointed by this review, as their tool isn’t even mentioned.

  1. George McGeachie Says:

Neither is Toad Data Modeller, Grandite SILVERRUN, etc. The article authors are probably jobbing IT journalists, not data modellers, and were asked to go and grab some marketing bumph for each tool and call it a review.

  2. The Bald Data Guy Says:

Infosphere Data Architect wasn’t included… I wonder why?
