Data modeling & database design are NOT the same thing (Sharp)

Alec Sharp has a great article over on the CA site.  Even non-ERWIN modellers should read it.  🙂

He describes ways to get business people (who are nearly all non-modellers) involved in data modelling.  The trick is to avoid telling them they’re doing data modelling.  Seems obvious in hindsight, and I wish I’d realised that in the early days.

His first tip is to “Reset your mindset – data modeling and database design are NOT the same thing”.  How many discussions have I had over the years, about when to produce data models, and how long to retain them?
